First principles study of gallium atom adsorption on the alpha-A[l.sub.2][O.sub.3](0001) surface
Article Abstract:
The study was conducted on the adsorption of Ga atoms in low coverage on the Al-terminated alpha-A[l.sub.2][O.sub.3](0001) surface by using first principles periodic boundary condition (PBC) calculations within the framework of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Strong interactions between the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital of the Ga atom and the surface state of A[l.sub.2][O.sub.3] surface are observed which promotes charge transfer from the Ga to the surface Al atoms, causing the surface Al atoms to move up from the surface.

Laser ablation condensation, coalescence, and phase change of dense [gamma]-[Al.sub.2][O.sub.3] particles
Article Abstract:
Dense [gamma]-[Al.sub.2][O.sub.3] condensates, with residual stress up to 3 GPa and ranging from nanometer to an unexpected micrometer size, are formed by pulsed laser ablation on Al target under oxygen background gas for a very rapid heating and cooling effect. Analytical electron microscopic observations indicate that such nanoparticles tended to coalesce over {111} facets to form multiple twin and tilt boundary.
